Ways to Prevent Check Fraud
According to the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, mail theft complaints have more than doubled from March 2020 to February 2021. The criminals are stealing mail directly from mailboxes or stealing the master keys to the blue mailbox drops. From this stolen mail, they attempt to alter the checks.
While there may never be a way to 100% stop fraud in today’s world, here are a few tips that you can utilize to try to prevent this form of check fraud.
1. Pay your bills online or use North Penn FCU’s bill payment program instead of mailing checks (if you are not signed up for the bill payment program you can find that under “Services” on this website)
2. If you do need to send a check through the mail, take it directly INSIDE the Post Office lobby instead of using the blue drop boxes or your home mailbox
3. Log into Online Banking frequently to review your recent transactions (if you are not signed up for Online Banking call the office at 215-822-9119)
4. If you do see any unauthorized transactions on your account, contact us at the Credit Union immediately
